Unit 5: Day 4

Day 4: State and Define the Objective

Students will define the y intercept in math as well as translate it to the real world meaning.

This objective is referring to finding the y intercept on a graph, and being able to refer it to the literal meaning of the graph. This will help us determine what the true meaning of the graph is, and what the purpose of the data is.

Day 4: Pictures and Graphs Relating to the Objective

This graph shows the Y intercept being -4. The points on a Y axis usually correspond with the points on the X axis when finding the real life meaning of the graph and data.

This graph shows the Y intercept being at positive 4.

This is a simple representation of the X and Y intercepts and how they correspond. In a graph comparing, for example, cost vs. ounces, wherever the y- intercept is is how much 0 ounces would be.

Quiz Time!

1. What is the real- world meaning of the y- intercept shown on the graph?

2. What is the real- world meaning of the y- intercept shown on the graph?

3. What is the real- world meaning of the y- intercept shown on the graph?

Key

1. The y- intercept means that the packaging, without any contents, is $5

2. The y- intercept means that snow doesn't melt at 40 degrees F.

3. The y- intercept means that there are no sales of lemonade until the temperature reaches 50 degrees.
